Fall 2008 Season
Post by mistcore on Sept 11, 2008, 4:31pm

It's that time again.
I'm already watching Xam'd, so the new shows that I'm interested in are:
-Gundam 00 2nd season (I'm Gundam. Just check my MAL profile.)
-Kurogane no Linebarrell (Gonzo...)
-Clannad: After Story (TOMOYO!)
-Tytania (Will it be another classic like LoGH?)
-Michiko and Hacchin (By Manglobe of Champloo and Ergo)
-Kyou no 5 no 2 (Loli-Minamike)
-Lucky Star OVA (MMORPG BATTLE & Kagami cosplaying as Miku)
-Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OVA (I need to finish ZSZS)

Some maybes are:
-Fist of the North Star: Raou Gaiden (not a fan of the newer style though)
-Casshern Sins
-Gairei -Rei-
-Ride Back (Robot bikes)
-Kemeko Deluxe
-Astronomical Warrior Sun Red

And...
Apparently, Gurren-Lagann's movie a big hit. Exceeded Gainax expectations, so we can probably expect more spin-offs from Gainax.

http://www.bunkatsushin.com/modules/bulletin/article.php?storyid=23531

The results from Ikebukuro's Cinema Sunshine is that in the first two days, 4140 people attended, with box-office takings of 6.57 million yen, the theater packed to capacity and people having to stand in many showings.

http://www.varietyjapan.com/news/movie_dom/2k1u7d00000ci6zp.html

Box-office takings for September 6-7 equal 21 million yen. Despite being for the moment only a limited release, the average per screen showed enough force to exceed 20th Century Boys. It's the number one movie of the week in Japan.

Fall 2008 Posters
English list
Japanese list

As usual, kudos to anonymous for making the poster, animeph for the English list and Moon Phase for being the best anime news source on this planet.

Something to think about:

MSNBC: Anime erotic subculture goes mainstream

What's true-or-not-true:

- When anime conventions started in the U.S. back in the mid-1990s, the main demographic was mostly Asian college-age male students, says 32-year-old otaku expert Lawrence Eng. “Now, at least 50 percent are female," he says. "Fandom itself is more diverse than ever.”

- But sexually-suggestive and explicit anime like "Gurren Lagann" and "Legend of the Overfiend," is finding an eager audience of adult Americans who are drawn to the post-modern, almost post-human mash-up of playful, blurry morality found in the genre.

- “The appeal of Japanese pop culture [to Americans] is that it is a moral-free zone,” explains Patrick Macias, editor in chief of Otaku USA, a bi-monthly magazine with a circulation of approximately 60,000.

- Because some of the edgier elements such as “Lolicon” (or Lolicom, a combination of “Lolita” and “comic”) involve very young anime girls in erotic situations, adult otaku media is a “really sensitive topic,” in the U.S., says Macias.

- Whatever it is, for a true otaku, Eng says, it is not pedophilia. “Fans abhor young looking [real-life] models,” he said. “They abhor real child porn. They do not want to be associated with that stuff.”

- “Among Japanese fans — the guys — it is a badge of honor to say, ‘We do not need real women; [these] figures are better, they do not talk back’” said Macias. “Americans are not there yet, but at the rate things are going, we are going to be seeing that.”

Gurren Lagann != Legend of the Overfiend.
I can tell that this guy has done his research, about as much as Jack Thompson did.

Nodame Cantabile (why not?)
Today in Class 5-2 (OVAs were funny)
Gundam 00 (my mech for the season)
Clannad: After Story (heck yea!)
ef: a tale of melodies (OMGOMGOMG)
Vampire Knight Guilty (because... uhh... "expanding my horizons")
Rosario and Vampire (does Gonzo have the guts to follow the manga this time?)

Let's see... all seven of those are... sequels (kinda).
I'll just let other people formulate my opinions for me and go with the flow.

Sexploration? Are you serious? I did have to turn to the part of the article that involved a bit (just a bit) of what I hang around.

Or, as British sociologist Sharon Kinsella suggests, the Lolita-complex anime culture appeals because it's rebellious. “Depictions of sexual deviance and uncontained energy projected onto girls in stories in boy’s comics ... contain an antiauthoritarian impulse that gains intense vicarious pleasure from viewing scenes of social chaos, misbehaviour and sensual liberation,” she has written.

You know, as much as I believe there are educational explanations for some situations, I'm not sure if going this far works.

Whatever it is, for a true otaku, Eng says, it is not pedophilia. “Fans abhor young looking [real-life] models,” he said. “They abhor real child porn. They do not want to be associated with that stuff.”

For example, on a Lolicon chat board recently, someone posted a Japanese DVD cover showing real schoolgirls, around 8 years old, dressed in uniforms, showing their panties, smiling, giggling. The community was outraged and urged harsh punishment for the makers of the DVD, arguing that there is a vast and important difference between “2-D” and “3-D.”

This is what I was rather happy to read, gives me warm fuzzies. And I have some reason to worry that the board they're mentioning here is a place I frequent. Especially since I remember this situation occurring...hmm...

Getting to the point though.

Going to Watch
Kyou no 5 no 2 - I haven't watched something of the genre for awhile. I'm hoping it will be a decent brand of humor (yeah right).

Fist of the North Star: Raou Gaiden - A character focus entirely on Raoh? I have little reason to believe it won't be badass. Hopefully they don't screw him up though.

Zettai Shougeki -Platonic Heart- - This one, in my opinion, looks like it's going to crash and burn. Sure a lot of big companies are going into it but I just don't see success written all over it. Especially with Lantis handling the music/character CDs. Oh boy for another 30 character CDs.

Tales of the Abyss - The game was good and the characters are highly memorable. A lot of potential for success as long as they don't go into left field with it.

Noramimi 2 - Sweeeet.

Rosario to Vampire CAPU2 - I called this sequel after seeing five episodes of the first season, so I feel some odd obligation to watch it. Plus, I enjoy counting panty shots.

Nodame - I'm expecting more of the same which is good enough for me.

Shugo Chara! 2 - ....Ican'tbelieveI'mstillwatchingthisIcan'tbelieveI'mstillwatchingthisIcan'tbelieveI'mstillwatchingthisIcan'tbelieveI'ms tillwatchingthisIcan'tbelieveI'mstillwatchingthis

It happens all the time, people get offended by that easily. They don't want to be grouped together with pedophiles, yet they can't take their eyes off prepubescent children's panties, granted those are fictional. I say as long as you aren't hurting anyone, you're free to live in any kind of fantasy world you please.

Linebarrel PV:

Interesting they got the Pokemon director. And I thought Goro Taniguchi is retiring after Code Geass. He even said it himself in Bamboo Blade. Ugh Hisaishi Hirai. I've been avoiding his character designs since Infinite Ryvius. Depends on how often the male characters blush for no reason and how big and round their eyes are, that may be the deciding factor of whether or not I will pick up this series. Finally, Ichiro Itano for Special Effects. No complain here. Best man for the job.

I just saw the PV for Tales of the Abyss, and I wonder if they'll use a shortened version of Bump of Chicken's "Karma," or if they'll actually go ahead and get another intro song. I guess I'll have a reason to watch another Sunrise show after all. It'll be good blogging material too, as I haven't played the game, so I don't have game-fanboy expectations.

Might possibly watch Vampire Knight Guilty and Rosario + Vampire CAPU2, but the previous seasons of each, I have never finished. I'm especially wary of R+V, after Episode 8, I lost interest in the anime completely because they always deemed it necessary to keep re-using Moka's transformation animation and the little annoying bat. Vampire Knight I never finished because I was too interested in 4 other series to keep track of.

Oh, and of course Clannad After Story. Prepare for BAAAAAWing. ^^;

Updated Fall 08 English List

Initial D Extra Stage 2 OVA (...I've watched all the D stuff so far, so why not?)
Hell's Angels
Eve no Jikan (Indie gone big)
Candy Boy (Yuri FTW)
Zettai Yareru Greek Shinwa (Erotic Greek Mythology? Sign me up!)

IMO the BIGGEST show that might be overlooked for this season:

Well, if you're someone like me who do a little background check before they got into a show, Tytania is definitely something you won't miss. So let's take a look at Tytania's page listed on ANN.

Staff: Macross/Orguss/LoGH production crew
Original creator: Yoshiki Tanaka
Animation: Artland
Broadcaster: NHK

A veteran crew, a good production company, a popular writer, and a guaranteed budget from NHK. I guess my only concern for this show will be the director, who is like in his 70s, and the last time he directed anything was over 15 years ago. Also, I remember he said something like he wish he could have directed more comedy series during his last interview. Other than that, this show is probably going to be amazing.

So now that Macross F is finally wrapping up, with all the attention and praise it's got (on top of having a sweet OST ^_^) I was thinking I'd get around to watching it.

Question is, can I just start with F and will the plot be fairly understandable to a complete newcomer to the series? Or is it semi-essential that I go through the roughly 80-90 episodes of its prequels?
Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by neur0manc3r on Sept 24, 2008, 1:51am

@Lucky*Star*Zubon: I think it's pretty understandable for someone who doesn't know a lot about the Macross universe/franchise. There are some references to the prequels, but they're not terribly crucial to enjoying the show. Just be warned -- some of the songs are addictive. =)

For e.g. I watched the original Macross a long time ago as a kid & can barely remember it, but I still caught a few references in Macross F -- some of the characters are designed to be homages to the earlier prequel counterparts & that made me cheer. And of course, there's Skull Squadron and pineapple cake...

As neur0manc3r said, you don't necessarily need the knowledge of prequels. If you have time though, you can watch the movie Macross: Do You Remember Love?, which is a retelling of the original series. You can also check out the OVAs Macross Plus and Macross Zero. Plus is the little gem of this franchise, and Frontier had one episode dedicated to referencing Zero. Finally, you can download Macross 7 theme songs and inserts performed by Yoshiki Fukuyama, which can be heard in the background occasionally.

That will pretty much cover most of the references you will encounter in Frontier.

Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by leek on Sept 26, 2008, 1:45am

To comment further on the ease of viewing on Macross F, there's no real background needed. But it's basically just a perk to have seen the previous series. There's a lot of parallels that are drawn between the main characters that get people like me excited. Plus once you're used to the Macross pattern (basically how all the series kind of move) it adds a bit and you can catch the smaller things they throw in.

Talk between Macross fans about Frontier basically sounds like gibberish. At least when I try to view my conversations with my friends about it I realize that it take some serious merit to understand what the heck we're saying.

@Above Article
Yeah, even without announcing it the movie would have been pretty obvious. Not only because Macross F was such a big series but the fact the ending was so open ended.

There's so much they could cover in the movie that it gets me pretty excited, I can only how long it'll be before I'm able to see it though. I really doubt they'll match the scale of the battle that was reached at the end of Frontier as well. Unless they just plan on viewing the main story from a different perspective or something. I'm kind of hoping for a continuation in plot though myself.

フ /ヽ ヽ_//

Honestly, you have to be totally lame to hate this show. 68 panty shots in one episode? And that was seriously me being kind of nice, I'm pretty sure I let one slide every now and then.

Anything that can be so terrible that it makes it good automatically ranks it high in my book. That and the ending theme (or was it the opening) What ever it was, was awesome.

Yup, Crunchyroll is offering free streaming and two direct downloads, 1.99 for Xvid encode, and 2.99 for h.264 encode. I think they changed the story around so they can showcase their CG action scenes in the first episode. Sunred is great, Seto no Hanayome staff strikes again.
Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by leek on Oct 3, 2008, 5:14pm

Yeah, but luckily it won't have to crash like Seto did after the first half of the show.

The thing about Seiji Kishi as a director is that he's really good at doing over the top humor and essentially gag humor. The only problem is that it can't really be retained to be entertaining for too long.

Galaxy Angel-Rune he screwed up royally. The GA series was built for humor but not always over the top. So he seemed to struggle in coming up with a good direction for the series. Seto no Hanayome lended itself to a lot more his style. The problem was that it also needed some substance. It went well for those first 13 episodes or so but once they added in the additional characters it also got run into the ground. Not like I'm blaming all of this on him entirely though.

So seeing as how Sunred is a 15 minute gag reel, there's no real way for him to screw up. It's basically what I think he was meant to do.
Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by shuchung on Oct 4, 2008, 9:23pm

Alright, three more shows and some hopefully helpful background.

Kannagi from A-1 Pictures. Of course, A-1 Pictures is really just the animation front of Aniplex, the actual animation studio behind Kannagi is Ordet, founded by series director Yutaka Yamamoto sometimes in 2007-2008. Yutaka Yamamoto, also known as the director who got fired after three episode in Lucky Star, is nevertheless a very capable animator, and his Ordet studio appears to be consisted of his buddies from Kyoto Animation. Along with veteran writer Hideyuki Kurata, Kannagi is looking good.

Toradora! Nothing new here. J.C. Staff, Rie Kugimiya, you know the rest. Because we can't survive a season without hearing Louise/Shana/Taiga shouting BAKA and URUSAI in our face.

Shikabane Hime: Aka from GAINAX. Original manga is mediocre at best, and GAINAX is already moving things around and making some interesting artistic choices here and there.

Standing by for Gundam 00...

Re: Fall 2008 Season

Second season definitely had a good start. 00's been criticized for the slow pace in the beginning and lost many fans, but it's finally paying off now as all the side characters from last season are coming together onto the center stage.

More new shows.

To Aru Majutsu no Index. Another one from J.C. Along with potential Slayers Revolution 2, Shana 3 and Zero 4, J.C. seems to be doing extremely well these days.

Kuroshitsuji. Another one from A-1. Don't really notice anyone on staff except Taku Iwasaki. Premise is about an impeccable butler serving a young noble Englishman. Other than the obvious yaoi underlying plot, not really sure if the story is supposed to be comedy, supernatural horror, or whatnot. Nice VA though.

The rest is alright, Yozakura Quartet, Skip Beat!, Kyou no 5-2, etc. Quartet has Rozen's production team, Skip Beat! is exactly the same as the manga, and 5-2 is already covered in the OVA, so it's not as funny.
Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by leek on Oct 5, 2008, 4:56pm

I'll just in some new/additional comments to what I've seen over the past few days.

Raoh Gaiden - I still can't adjust to the new look of Hokuto no Ken. I know it's not impossible to create a reminiscent feel either so I somehow hold a grudge that they won't do it. Other then that, they essentially did what I requested the series be about: "Raoh punches things". Essentially the first episode.

Tales of Abyss - Episodes 1 and 2 are out now which leaves it open for more judging. They're hugging the game plot pretty nicely and they still kept Karma as an opening. And obviously since it's Sunrise the animation doesn't suffer from any glaring flaws. Tales of the Abyss gets crazier as it gets deeper in so I'll be more critical when they start getting into real plot. But it does give me a huge excuse to fanboy Arietta again.

Kyou no 5-2 - Personally, I still like it. It's simple and I always go for that kind of thing. And the fact there will be more leads me to be pretty solid with it. I don't have high expectations so it's all good for me.

To Aru Majutsu no Index - This show interests me a lot. A lot of huge potential for action along with some nice ladies thrown into the mix. I remember hearing a few things about the novels but I can't say I remember too much of the criticisms/compliments that came out of it. But the manga is being published in Gangan who tend to have a decent showing. I may try reading through some of it to see what the series could get to be like in the future.

Shugo Chara Doki - Why in the hell did I watch a 52 episode series if they were just going to recap it in the first f**king episode of the second season? Seriously, why couldn't you just have a normal intro episode to make me feel slightly less bad? Other then that, it looks like they'll be bring back my favorite trap ever, so it's all good.

Not sure what made me decide to check this....
Maybe it was the action scenes in the PV.
Comedy isn't that great, as it adds fan service to a cheap imitation of the Hare Guu style.
Action is ok, but I can see this quickly turning into a generic show for me.

Tytania, here I come.

Um...I can't say much, but man.

My 3 current recommendations:
-Tytania (You'll probably like this one if you liked LoGH)
-Gundam 00 2nd season (IFF you have watched the 1st season)
-Tentai Senshi Sunred (I'm serious)

This. Like big time. It's worth it for almost opening alone.

Otherwise I'll say Tales of Abyss to be on the safe side. Assuming Sunrise decides to put money into the action scenes then things should heat up later. I'll blow a blood vessel if they half ass the bigger battles in the series.

Glad to see I'm not the only one watching Shugo Chara this season. It's still too early to tell what will be good or not, but a partial list with impressions for now is as follows:

Gundam00 - Setsuna is the gundam
Kannagi - dancing OP and moe
Index - Mx0 anyone?
Shugo Chara - delicious Amu. Must lick.
Tytania - tea.
Maccademi Wasshoi - magic lolis
Linebarrels - herp Hisashi, your character art still looks terrible, but I'll watch it for the mechs
Ga-Rei Zero - ep 1: wut?
Shikabane Hime - GAINEX
Kemeko DX - JESUS JESUS GOD
Kuronutssuji - need my GAY replacement this season since antique is over
Yokozura Quartet - youkai moe

I'm still skeptical over Toradora. It's basically RIE IS TSUNDERE AGAIN: The Animation Part 56. I watched the first two for the parrot, but if this show can be dropped without hesitation.

I chose not to watch Rosario because I never finished the first season, and unless they decide to show Tsukune being GAR, I doubt I'll pick it up either.

Sunred needs subs badly.

The OP & ED are old school and stylized.
The actual episode itself doesn't have too much going on, but started off well with Hacchin's daily life.

Yep, and that movie is going to be competing against Evangelion 2.0, thus continuing Oshii's records of box office flops. At least he's not the director this time around. He's probably too busy working on writing screenplays and directing his new live-action movies nowadays.

Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by shuchung on Oct 18, 2008, 11:55pm

Michiko and Hacchin was indeed delicious. Easily one of the best first episodes this season.

Shikabane Hime is rather low key compare to GAINAX's previous effort. I'm not particularly drawn to the story or characters, but the atmosphere and tone of the picture are well painted, and the action gig by Akira Amemiya is satisfying.

Kurozuka was a pleasant surprise for me. It is adapted from the manga by the same name. The highly sensual style reminded me strongly of Yoshiaki Kawajiri, or Takeshi Koike, in terms of character design and animation. The original manga has some semblance to Battle Angel Alita, with the same amount of gore and extra full frontal nudity. However, I don't think the sex bit will be translated to the TV anime adaptation.

Kannagi is still very well animated after three episodes. It almost feels malicious the way this show steals all the conventions established by Kyoto Animation. Granted the staff is consisted of former Kyoto Animation members. Perhaps this is all just part of Kyoto Animation's marketing scheme?

Ga-Rei -Zero- is killing off more main characters...and breaking things. Because killing off your characters toward the end of a series is simply not enough to shock the viewers anymore...

Mizushima's Kemeko Deluxe is interesting, to say the least. Not quite as genius as his Hare+Guu, but definitely on par with the absurdity in his Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan. Though to be honest, compare to these laugh-out-loud's, I prefer his slice-of-life, light comedy series like Genshiken, and Oofuri.

One Outs ep 1 finally came out. God this show looks amazing. The opening makes me just want to rip my shirt off. MANLY. The only baseball I've watched before this was Princess Nine (Is that what it is? The baseball anime, not Princess 69...). Never really been too interested in baseball since it's slow and boring to me. One Outs is pretty awesome though. Baseball and Akagi level MINDGAMES.

ANN: A Look at Key Animation
Hey an interview on ANN that I actually care! How did I miss this!

Jokes aside, this is a rather technical interview with the owner of AniPage, one of the few blogs that I follow loyally. What's interesting about this interview is that the three interviewers have very diverse backgrounds which makes for a good display of anime fans' different opinions and understanding to animation. I think for a lot of younger animation fans such as myself, we were first exposed to individual key animators through Norio Matsumoto's good work in early Naruto. And from then on, recognizing the characteristics and influences of key animators has become a great pleasure for me. It's a field I'd definitely recommend other fans to delve into.

Wow lol havent been here in so long. My roommate's friend from University of Texas, Scott, keeps showing up and going to JAC lol. Thought Id see whats going on here ^^

I was following:
Tytania - good promise but seems slow and lack the epicness of LoGH.
Ga-rei -zero- amazing animation too bad it is a prequel to a mediocre manga. As a standalone it is good
Kannagi - def the best romance/comedy this season
Skip Beat - a gem, very funny but this series will be LONG
Shikabane Aka - gave up on, as dull as it gets. So much for being the "secret anime" by Gainax
Toradora - tossup, funny but Rie Kugimiya as the seiyuu for main character. Says enough

then of course Bleach and other never ending stuff lol.

Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by mistcore on Nov 12, 2008, 11:48pm

Tytania: It is not quite up to the quality of LoGH. I'm starting to think that I'll wait until the entire show is done to catch up.
Ga-rei zero: It is okay, but the fact that it is a prequel to the manga already ruins the end of it for me. Especially considering the story in the manga...
Casshern Sins: BAD ASS.
Sunred: Does less screen time for Sunred mean a bad thing? NEVER.
Gundam 00: Hopefully the pace won't continue to slow down. Needs more Ali and Mister Bushido.
Michiko to Hacchin: It took 3 episodes to finally achieve the same atmosphere that was in Bebop and Champloo. I just hope there will be more comedic episodes.
Xam'd: FURUICHI STOLE THE SPOTLIGHT.
Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by pucman on Nov 13, 2008, 6:19pm

Tytania is hard to gauge still because of lack of battles (only 1 in 5 episodes) and lack of GAY. LOGH had homo vibes emitting from it like a uranium cell. Tytania comes off as very straigh-ohgodIcan'tstopfappingtoLira.

Ga-rei Zero. Pretty good for a lesbian anime. I've watched worse for lesbians. Like Kannazuki no Miko. Although Re-sublimity is god tier. And good (wasted) mech design wtf. Only thing that bothers me about Ga-Rei is that everyone's mouths have weird shading so it looks like they're always doing this :< for some reason.

I can't believe I'm the only one watching Kuroshitsuji. In b4 homolust. It's better than I expected though. Insane chainsaw shinigami was out of left field and stabbed me in the face.

I'm still trying to watch Earl and Fairy. The annoying chimes in the background are driving me literally insane though. Takes me like 2 hours to watch an ep because I have to pause every time I hear a chime just to try not to break something with my face.

Edit: lol autocensor censored Kuroshitsuji

Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by shuchung on Nov 23, 2008, 5:43pm

Oh it's a good decision to work with Crunchyroll despite whatever ANN forum has to say. They are definitely ahead of the game in terms of technology and user base, ie., multiple subtracks, high quality streaming/direct download option, and payment method. And even though there is no official report yet, GONZO's experiment earlier this year probably showed some positive results that drew in more business deals. Now that Crunchyroll has sealed a contract with the largest copyright holders in Japan, the implication is huge. If everything goes right, we will be effectively bypassing US television and licensor, and still be legal.

Of course there are still doubts of whether this plan will fly or not, and I'm interested in how many animation studios will depart from TV broadcaster to sign up with Crunchyroll independently.
Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by jrpopdog on Nov 23, 2008, 6:07pm

Well, another factor would be the subs/dubs... when they say that it's gonna be almost instant, would it include the subs/dubs or just the raws? After a week, would that be the raws or with subs ~.~

Also, say hello to commercial breaks XD

I dunno, i'll have to see the details
Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by shuchung on Nov 23, 2008, 7:24pm

There will be subs for sure, since they are working with the Japanese creators, the translators can grab the scripts beforehand. As for pricing, there is no official announcement yet, but you basically have two options on Crunchyroll, free streaming or paid direct download. Generally speaking Crunchyroll provides one of the higher end streaming video services, however, where direct download is available, they scale down the streaming video quality to appetite the paid option.

Back in April when it first started, Crunchyroll let the buyers decide the price they are willing to pay, but they have since then narrowed down the pricing range to around $2 and $3 per episode, for DivX and H.264 encodes respectively, which is roughly the same as retailing price on the cheapest box set? And dramatically less than buying single episodes disks.

It just means that Youtube now has the capacity to play even higher quality videos. It's not going to do videos with poor encoding to begin with any good. But yeah, Internet streaming can get some pretty amazing stuff at the expense of CPU power.

I've used Crunchyroll to preview series for a long time now. Not sure I like the direction the site is going but I cant really complain since the service is free. Skip Beat is an excellent choice though. Storyline is pretty stereotypical shoujo but the execution is great. I liked it so much I read the manga for it. Havent liked a manga this much since Pastel and the Pastel is like stereotypical shounen lol.

BTW anyone seen the commercial for Hanatoyume featuring a gaijin learning Japanese culture? It is in the raws for Skip Beat.

Don't ask me why, I think it's because watching things like this gives me a bad excuse to dig out and play through the source eroge again. But yeah, bad and incredibly generic if I had to describe the anime. Not like that would ever be a surprise.

Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by leek on Dec 2, 2008, 7:19pm

Point is with these types of series for me it's what gets me the better deal out of it. Like I said, watching an eroge base gives me some justification to dig things out again just to check back with source material.

If I watch Toradora!, I have to deal with listening to Hocchan's fans, Kugyuu's fans, and Minorin's fans. It has Eri Kitamura in it which is somewhat beneficial but her alone can't justify me having to listen to three of the most obnoxious CV fan groups out there if I want to try and discuss it.

Kannagi just doesn't give me any benefit period. So it's just kind of out because of that. I realize it's had some decent CVs in there, two of which I'm really fond of. It also has Mai Nakahara though, and if you know me, then you know that I believe her to have a curse over her head. Not that I dislike her voice but about every series she's in crashes and burns for me at some point.

Leapt Through Time's Hosoda to Direct Summer Wars Film

By now everyone should really take note of who Hosoda is. AFAIK, Mamoru Hosoda was an ordinary key animator working at Toei before his directorial debut, the first Digimon movie, at 2000. After that he's been recruited by Studio Ghibli to direct Howl's Moving Castle as one of the young talents to succeed Hayao Miyazaki, which he later declined for unstated reasons. Hosoda's next achievement is his Louis Vuitton commercial "Superflat Monogram" based on modern artist Takashi Murakami's character designs. Since then he has directed two more films, the sixth One Piece movie in 2006 and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time in 2007. Girl Who Leapt Through Time is his first movie to gain international recognition as well as grand awards from film festivals all around the world. Now at the age of 41, Mamoru Hosoda's clearly established himself as a prominent animation director in Japan, and his every movie in the future is definitely worth looking forward to.

Miyuki Sawashiro: I love Miyuki but I can only think of her as younger boys rather then just a tomboy. I'm somewhat upset they didn't choose Marina Inoue.

Rie Tanaka: About the only CV here I could approve of for their role. I'm pretty sure a few of the voices she's done have been steered towards Sakuya.

I could comment on the others. But these are the semi-nice comments I had that I could give. Back to EV Training Pokemon rather then studying.

So, you mean to say that...Bamboo Blade, Clannad, Higurashi, and My-Otome all "crashed and burned"? That happening escapes my memory for some reason...

I can say that, I am (and likely other touhou fans are) just excited something (at least better than that previous circle's attempt) is coming to fruition, which hopefully bodes well for a future studio adaptation haha (like that'll ever happen...)
Re: Fall 2008 Season

Bamboo Blade can hardly count since Mai played one of the most minor characters in that show. I don't even have to bother voicing my opinion on Clannad anymore. Higurashi was never good to me, just a nuisance. As for Mai-hime/Otome, don't get me started. Those are FINE examples of series that truly did crash and burn at the end rather then just in the general way of things.

Either way, most of all that matters to me about the Touhou series is the game themselves (like most of the people I know) which are getting worse by the second. But with all the hype it gets nowadays it was hard for it not to start eventually. A shame but not like it could have been avoided.

Eh well, I guess we have different takes on that, My-Otome was one of my favorite shows of 2006, probably only second to Honey & Clover. Higurashi season 1 was great (save for some snags and lost in epic points from overhyping). Clannad actually brought a harem eroge's plot to somewhat normalcy (as opposed to previous harem anime eroge adaptations, where somehow magically every girl's plot is mutually exclusive from another). Point acknowledged on BB.

For Higurashi and Clannad, you're trying too hard to compare it to their source material, rather than looking at the anime as a standalone. Granted, that's pretty hard to do, but it's like Lord of the Rings fans complaining about the exclusion of a minor character in the films that sings and dances, whose only purpose is to give the main characters their weapons (true story, forget who it was though since it's been ages since I've read the book). Claymore, for example, diverged from the source material...but that's not why it ended badly, it ended badly because the ending itself sucked and was a poorly written, rushed way to end a series. On the other hand, FMA diverged as well and came up with a surprisingly interesting, unique ending. Death Note's manga ending was a lot better, but the anime was still amazing as a standalone. If you look at it objectively, there's a lot less wrong with some shows than you make them out to be ;)

As for the Touhou games themselves, I'd wait till TH12 to see if ZUN is listening to some of the complaints voiced by fans after Subterranean Animism. But...MoF and SA really aren't that bad of games. I'd say they both have more enjoyable story modes than PCB (because Prismriver and Yuyuko are not fun, ugh). MoF has one of my favorite Extra stages, probably only second to PCB Extra (Ran ftw). And Subterranean Animism has some of the coolest concept spells ever. It's also a huge step up graphically, for a Touhou game. ZUN made your characters suck more, and the game 10x harder...which, if you're up for a good challenge... I would love to see a resurrection of more playable characters in the next one though (but most importantly...a FIXED homing Reimu, geez)

Oh, and PoFV is amazing. おれすげえーつえーよ :P
Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by leek on Dec 13, 2008, 1:43am

MoF was only worth it for Guncannon, Kerochan, and of course Kappa. That's about all though. I didn't really hate the cast for Subterranean but nothing in that game made me like them.

Subterranean was FAR from difficult though. The difficultly may be considered harder because of the new continue system but I was able to go through that game waaaay too far on no shot on my first run.

That and along the lines you said, I'd like to see Sakuya a permanent addition to the main playable cast. I think everybody would be happy about that one.

To say something anime related. We're long approaching Winter season. And now we get more Maria-sama ga Miteru, Minami-ke, and Hajime no Ippo. Finally a season that can't suck no matter what happens.

Yeah let's move on. Somebody go open the winter thread.
Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by liuxuande on Dec 14, 2008, 2:21am

SA...Far from difficult? Haha, getting a no-continues Normal clear was pretty much hell since I'd be down to the wire by the time I'd reach Utsuho. Like everyone and their pet ravens, I cleared it with 0 lives left and Reimu A... only to die about 50 times before I figured out how to beat Sanae without losing a life in the Extra Stage. The cast wasn't extraordinary, but you have to admit, Utsuho's spells were pretty WTF.

Scoring [well] is also ridiculously hard in SA. With how most of the harder spells are, you have to graze...at high speeds to keep that meter up so you can autocollect? You're gambling so much for so little gain, since you have to continuously do that to score. It's not like Imperishable Night where you have a choice how to collect Time, or PCB where all you need is fast kills and to pick up the Cherry Point items.

And geez, Sakuya would be incredible. Gimme Sakuya A from PCB and I'll be happy. Or Youmu from IN (Reimu C in SA is kinda like Youmu, except awfully weak in comparison...)

But yes, before this turns into (as if it hasn't already, oops) a touhou thread, a Winter thread is in order. Someone who knows what's actually airing open it haha, I've been so out of the loop lately ^^;;

In other news: Japan's best-selling books (fictions, general, and comics) in 2008.

1. One Piece Vol.50 - 1,678,208 copies
2. One Piece Vol.51 - 1,646,978 copies
3. NANA Vol.19 - 1,645,128 copies
4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - 1,624,630 copies
5. One Piece Vol.49 - 1,544,000 copies

As you can see, One Piece takes up three spots on the top five list. Seriously, with this pace One Piece will be the best selling title in the history of Shounen Jump next year. It's also kind of impressive that after 51 volumes I'm still in love with this series.

I guess I'll just post this here...

Does anyone know about how many copies they'd have? I'm going to winter comiket, but I don't feel like lining up forever...

Thanks for quoting Udonge too, she really appreciates it :P

:o

But sorry, no idea. As you can see from Maikaze's site: http://maikaze.com/, they've taken down most of what used to be there, except for a recent response they posted to ZUN. I suspect it's for reason of a lot of the high traffic they've been getting, and will continue to get (as I can vaguely infer from what it says on the bottom, lol).

The Comiket catalog won't have number of copies listed, will it?

To be fair, I'll be staying in Osaka during those nights, so by the time I even got there, I would be screwed in line.

Also, I still haven't opened my comiket catalog yet, been busy. I'll probably flip through it on the train later.

Eh I tried to look it up but couldn't find anything either. It is released in Taiwan though. Around 20 USD for the DVD box set and 6 USD for the VCD box set? I might have caught a glimpse of it back when it was aired in Taiwan, but I can barely remember anything. What a niche title haha.

Oh I should add that I was talking about the ones released in Taiwan. From the licensor's website here and here. Actually the DVD box set only costs NT$218=USD$7? on the official site.

Know anywhere to buy it? If not what is the most popular way of file sharing in Taiwan? Traditional subtitles but I guess I can live with that. Better than watching RAWs.

And I loled at this: "經典美少女偶像動畫!"

If this doesnt work out I guess I go download PerfectDark lol. Dunno if Share or Winny is still alive or not.

p.s. How did you look up the Taiwanese licensor?
Re: Fall 2008 Season
Post by shuchung on Jan 13, 2009, 9:24pm

I just saw it on YESASIA for $12. Looks like the same thing to me except they overcharge you by about 70%...I'm actually pretty out of loop with Taiwan's file sharing methods. I would go to China for that, which usually means eMule or bt.greedland. If I'm desperate enough I'd probably whip out my PD/Winny as well. Or maybe make a few international calls?

As for Taiwan licensor, I know a lot of HK/TW forums out there do keep track of what's been released, but I don't know if there is a news site dedicating to this. ANN has been steadily updating their encyclopedia with Chinese and Korean licensing information. Like this page: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=7253

A staff in charge of their encyclopedia is from Taiwan. I've exchanged a few posts with the guy, but that's about it...

In the meantime you can always check out the licensor's site for that. The big three are:
http://www.e-muse.com.tw/
http://www.prowaremedia.com.tw/
http://www.e-kids.com.tw/
...

Happy hunting!
